Pabitin (II) – Thoughts in a Racialised and Ableist World

Reflecting on the artist’s struggle against stigma and discrimination, this Pabitin – a criss cross structure used in Filipino children’s parties, depicts the aftermath of joy – the things experienced in silence and the thoughts that spiral when no one is around. Through fragments from the artist’s loose leaf journals, this piece represents grief and loss of wonder but also a yearning for connection and hope.

Pabitin (I)

Challenging the Western concept of linear time and the institutional preservation of oil paintings as historical records, this work – intentionally left to weather and decay in an outdoor installation – honours the interconnectedness between paper, craft, the human, and the spirit world of our ancestors.
